THAT'S HOW IT STARTED - Part 2

THAT'S HOW IT STARTED - Part 2

Maan's narration to the kidnapper

I was waiting near a park for my girl friend Simran...

My happiness grew no bounds...

But God planned another awesome surprise for me...

A girl was batting nearby and was asking a kid to bowl soon...

N as soon as I saw Simran I started walking no running towards her with red roses bouquet in my hand...

Simran was too waving at me to come soon on the other side of the tiny road.

Meanwhile, that girl hit a sixer...all the children started shouting to catch it.

That ball hit the golf car's glass...the driver lost the control and hit a motor bike coming in the opposite direction...

In order to save himself from the disaster, the driver of a sumo diverted his vehicle on which I was running...

That sumo hit me...I flew in the air hit the ground and became unconscious uttering Simran's name...

At last, I opened my eyes in the hospital...

In the hospital

As I was regaining my consciousness bit by bit

I heard two nurses talking..

Nurse 1: Is Dr.Anand coming for rounds?

Nurse 2: No dear...he is already having rounds with Simran
Nurse 1: Who is this Simran?
Nurse 2: This patient's girl friend
Nurse 1: Oh toh abhi isko chodke doctor ko jaal mein phasa liya??
[Oh, so left him and now is after that doctor?]
Nurse 2: Hey don't be loud...he might feel bad if he is conscious...
Nurse 1: What can this poor fellow do even if he's conscious?? He is helpless...

Saying so they left the room...

I opened my eyes and saw Simran and Anand talking close to each other and giggling...Anand was giving Simran the same flowers which I took for her...

I felt very bad..frustrated with myself I closed my eyes and covered myself with a blanket.

Maan's narration ends

After 3 months

A news channel was on in a house...

A news reporter was reporting a report...

This afternoon in Kukatpally's KPHP colony, a 10year old girl was found working in a famous doctors' couple house, this was strictly opposed by DEEKSHA CHILD WELFARE ASSOCIATION chairman Mrs. Savitri Khurana...

Savitri Khurana: That child was physically assaulted and wasn't even given food.

The colony's chairman couldn’t bear all this violence against a small child and even filed a complaint against them in police station, but the doctors claimed themselves to be innocent

A dog named Chocolate was found watching this news...

News reporter to Savitri Khurana “Madam, what message do you want to give to the society regarding this pathetic situation?”

Savitri Khurana: CONDENM CHILD LABOUR

In the kitchen of that home

Don't you know this is also a sort of child labor? I too will put a case on you...

Maan spoke with teary eyes cutting onions...

His mother came and kissed his cheek lovingly, Child? You?

It has been 20 years since I stopped changing your diapers.

She took the utensils and went to work sitting at the dining table.

Maan sat beside her and asked, Where did you say you were going yesterday?

To your sister’s house

Maan frowned and said, then where did you go? For that social service and child labor?

She gave a bigger frown cutting the vegetables

Maan: Do it, but take time off, what will happen to your health?

Savitri: This is Iron body baby

Maan: Whose darling? You go breathless when you shout and your legs ache when you walk a little, don’t tell me.

I am there to look after you, but who will look after me?

Savitri shooed away his hand trying to steal a carrot (He ate it anyway). She suddenly remembered something, Oh! I forgot Mr.Tv5, you got a wedding invitation.

Maan: Wedding card for me? Who is that useless fellow?

He was shocked to see the Wedding invitation of Simran and Anand.

MY CRY BABY - Part 5

Part five

And she really was fine and I was greatly contended, thank God for that.

For a year or so after her marriage, I made a point to have a video chat with her at least once or twice a week. I always had a fear.

As the time passed, her smile grew a bit, her eyes radiated more happiness as well as her reassurances to me. Never in my life, I had so severely insisted on a video chat. I guess her husband had an idea why I did so, but I didn’t care then. He was a man of few words. He would sometimes join her during our chat sessions and we somehow gang up against my sister and tease her a lot.

As the days passed, I was immensely relieved.  She gave birth to a beautiful baby girl.

After I completed my studies, my new professional journey began. I landed up with few jobs for an experience which ultimately made me shift my base to the US with an MNC. I took it up and everyone was happy especially my family.

Few days before my departure, my sister’s nagging started. She would complain about the distance but then would be proud of my achievements. She would complain about the distance and time difference but then would pretend to understand. She would complain about me being vegetarian would limit my food choices, not taking care of myself and what not. I couldn’t understand how she would bring each and everything and blow it out of proportion. She even cribbed that I would marry a Firangi and never come back to India. I felt half of my life was spent on listening to her carping. Women can be tiring. Period.

The first thing as soon as I settled down was to call her and give my phone number. I even had to give my work email id to please her.

One nagging stopped and after a few months, other started. This time from my mother. I had to get back to India to get married, directly, no engagement. My mother made the choice, she was very happy and eventually I had to accept, there was no other go. There was no talking back.

I conveyed the news to my sister, my mistake. I can never forget the way she and jiju [I liked calling him jiju, it took a bit of time though] teased me. My Goodness, several times I logged out of skype midway.

Fortunately, it was the holiday season.

As the schedule was tightly packed, I didn’t have the chance to meet my would-be properly making me grumpy. Considering only her looks, she was really a beautiful girl.

I enjoyed all the rituals especially Sangeet where everyone irrespective of their age shook their leg. I felt elated seeing happy faces everywhere. I captured the moment when my mom and my wife danced together [My wife, yes, that realization felt liberating and even euphoric sometimes]. To be included and to include others felt good.

Especially her. I liked her. A lot.

THAT'S HOW IT STARTED - Part 1

PART 1

KIDNAPPER: what did you mean by running away like that??

Huh?
Do you know one thing?
Your brain doesn't have any sense
and even my gun doesn't have any license...

The kidnapper made him stand on his own feet and dragged him to the passenger seat....

while dragging he made a call to someone

KIDNAPPER: Ya I caught him.

..
don't worry....
..
proceed with the preparations for the marriage...
..
I will deliver him dead or alive at your place...
..
Just be prepared with the cash....

After his call, he made Maan sit on the passenger seat and locked the door, as the window was opened he took a coke can from inside.

Opening it he shoved it into Maan's mouth...

Coughing a bit he gulped some..irritated at the way the things were going....

Maan started shouting
why am I here??
Why did you kidnap me??

The kidnapper pointed the gun on his forehead which instantly shut him up....

Walking around and making himself comfortable in the driver seat, the kidnapper started the vehicle asked him to entertain him by singing a song

Utterly irritated Maan barked....I don't know singing.

Again shoving the gun on his forehead the kidnapper said sing

Maan started singing

lakdi ki kathi
kathi pe ghoda
ghode ki dumm pe
jo maara hathoda....in a bit annoying way

Kidnapper: Haan bas bas tum toh bahut hi accha gate ho

[Stop..stop, I know that you sing pretty well]

Maan: Maine pehle hi tumne kaha tha ki mujhe gaana nahi aata

[I said already that I don't know how to sing]

Kidnapper: Accha theek hai....tell me a story then...hmm....your love story...

[Okay, tell me your love story then]

Maan: This is how it started....

THAT'S HOW IT STARTED - Prologue

THAT'S HOW IT STARTED - Prologue

A Tata Sumo vehicle was moving at a fast pace on Hyderabad-Bangalore highway.

Suddenly the passenger door got opened of that moving vehicle and a person whose hands were tied and mouth stuffed with a cloth fell off twirling on the ground injuring himself...

With an effort, he got up and started running to avoid colliding with the fast approaching vehicle. He ran until his legs gave up. At last, he lost his balance and fell on the ground breathing heavily.

The guy from the driver seat came up to him and shoved the gun on his forehead.

MY CRY BABY - Part 4

Part four

There she was, completely transformed into the most beautiful bride I have ever seen. With her downcast eyes, shy smile adorning her face, carrying a coconut in her hands, she was making her way to the mandap.

I did not take a proper look at the groom before, but now when she was about to sit in front of him with a big cloth in between them [don’t know why] I felt they were an amazing together.

Observing the body language of the groom’s side and the happiness on their faces, in turn, the bride’s family hospitality and warmth gave some sense of comfort to me, but you really never know.

My sister’s outfit was already changed twice and rituals never seemed to end [South Indian weddings are totally different] but she looked glowing in both the sarees. Finally, after a long time, the wedding progressed to the tying of mangalsutra giving me a feeling of panic and relief at the same time, I really cannot describe that moment. It just left me with tears in my eyes.

We all exited the temple and a small dias was arranged for the photograph time. I was excited to see how she would react as it was our first meeting. I actually waited for the crowd to clear, well, when she saw me, she was shocked at first and covered her open mouth with both hands. Typical reaction of girls, it was fun to watch, she extended her hand indicating to come closer. Don’t know why I was hesitant to touch her. The groom pulled me towards them and she gave me the tightest hug I have ever known, but I couldn’t hug her properly as I had a gift in my hand. When she releases me she had tears in her eyes, cry baby I whispered, to which she hit me and gave a teary smile. She introduced her husband and he too hugged me. I gave the gift to him and immediately she asked, Mera gift kaha hai? I replied, I came for you. She hit me again, she and her hitting would never stop I guess. I looked at her husband rubbing my chest with a smile.

I didn’t expect when I was called for their family photograph including her whole bunch of relatives, as I tried to stand in the corner, aunty pulled me towards her and made me stand beside her. I felt honored.

As the day progressed, her departure was nearer and most of the things were packed and set in the vehicles. She pulled me aside and gave a heavy package, told me to open in the college. I questioned, kya zarurat hai but she dismissed my words.

It was getting emotional as time passed and she literally cried buckets, especially when she clung to her father. He somehow managed to sooth her and made her walk towards the car. She turned, giving a glance to all the people who stayed waving goodbyes at her. She acknowledged them with a teary smile and saw me standing at a corner.

She came to me and wiped my tears. I didn’t know I had tears in my eyes till she wiped them. She apologized for not bidding a proper goodbye. I nodded a no, I didn’t know what my facial expression was, she just caressed my cheek and went away saying,

I will be fine bro, take care of yourself.

MY CRY BABY - Part 3

Part three

It was around my final year I guess, her marriage was fixed. And it was a huge shock to me.

She didn’t talk to me for two whole months for not attending to her engagement.

How could I?

How could I explain to her that she would miss her freedom?

How could I explain to her that she would miss the joy and hardship of job hunting?

How could I explain to her that she would miss the satisfaction of taking her first salary?

How could I explain to her that she would miss the professional success that could follow?

How could I explain her about the dowry they were giving to the groom’s family wasn’t correct? (Thank God her parents belong to upper middle class)

How could I explain her about the consequences that could follow if something went wrong with her marriage if she isn’t financially independent?

How could I explain her if her husband or in laws were not protective of her? (Even now I cannot think of domestic violence and all)

How could I explain to her?

I really don’t know.

The day of her marriage came. It was easy for me to attend her marriage as I stayed in hostel (I had to attend her marriage otherwise I wouldn’t have been alive to tell our story.. lol). I made up something at my home and reluctantly went to attend her marriage.

The marriage venue was a temple, strangely. It was a South Indian wedding which was foreign to me. After walking through the entrance, there was a big temple on one side and a big hall where the seating arrangement for the guests was done, on the other. I could see all ages of unknown faces and tried staying at a corner. I caught a few giggling kids and asked them about her. They told that the marriage has just begun and bride was performing gauri puja. I was relieved that I wasn’t late and thanked them. I took a seat and started observing the surroundings. The temple atmosphere and the music was soothing.

Her father spotted me long after, as he came to greet a few guests outside the venue. I can’t describe the warmth with which her father received me. Holding my hand, scolding me for not coming to the engagement along with greeting a few guests, he took me a very happy bride’s mother. No introductions were needed of course, but he said, dekh toh! tera beta aaya hai. Those moments were one of the best moments of my life.

She made me sit comfortably on the steps of the temple, wiped the sweat from my forehead with her saree’s pallu and said something in her mother tongue which I didn’t understand. She hit her forehead lightly and told her to stay there, I immediately asked her if I could help her with something. She smiled, kissed my forehead and went away. Gazing here and thought when will I be able to see my sister. Seconds later, aunty brought two young lads and instructed them to be with me [I guess]. They started showing me random people and how they were related to my sister. I was having a great time with the young generation when one of them pointed at the entrance of the temple.
